Dia del Niño, A New Tradition

California's Great America |
April 23, 2019

Being a first generation US-born child has always made it a bit confusing as to how I identify myself. Born in the United States to Mexican parents, I now know that that in itself is what I am deeply rooted in. I am Mexican-American and with that comes a wonderful mix of two cultures.

Growing up at Great America

Born in the Bay Area, I spent countless sweltering summers at Great America with my family. Through the transition of holding my mother’s hand on Lucy’s Crabbie Cabbies, celebrating my 8th grade graduation in Boomerang Bay with my best friends, to now working at my childhood playground, I’ve quite literally grown up here.

Hispanic Roots

With my own physical growth, it has also been amazing to see how the park has grown and changed over the years. Sunday, April 28 marks the beginning of a possible new and colorful tradition for Hispanic families with our new celebration Dia del Niño.

New Traditions

Day of the Kid, or Dia del Niño, is celebrated across Latin American countries and is meant to celebrate the lives and joy that little ones bring. While growing up, I was deeply fascinated with this holiday, as my parents would make it known that this day in their youth was deeply cherished. Not having any type of exposure to this event, I was left with my own excitement as I could only imagine how amusing a day dedicated to children would be.

With a park as friendly and familiar as Great America, Dia del Niño is sure to be nothing short of vibrant and festive culture for the entire family.

Creciendo en Great America
