Celebrate Cinco with a Great America Michelada

Last year, California’s Great America celebrated Cinco de Mayo with a brand-new event that brought Hispanic music, food and drink right into the center of the park. One of the highlights of our Cinco de Mayo weekend was a michelada contest.

In 2019, we invited Bay Area residents to submit their own recipes for this famed adult beverage. Then Erick Ponce (Great America’s executive chef) reproduced each recipe, which we served in the park. All eight recipes were put head to head at the end of the festival when they were judged during a live contest in the park. The winner received round-trip tickets to Guadalajara, Mexico—and endless bragging rights!

This year, although we’re not able to celebrate Cinco de Mayo the way we had planned with another Hometown Square fiesta, we wanted to make sure you’re still able to get a taste of the party at home. Chef Erick has put together a video tutorial that walks you through how to make his version of a michelada right in your own kitchen!

Don’t have all the ingredients that Chef Erick suggests? No worries—that’s the beauty of the michelada, Erick says. It is fully customizable and tastes great no matter what kind of garnishes you add.

So get ready to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a tasty beverage, Great America style. Although the Bay Area is staying home for the time being, the Great America team can’t wait to welcome you back for another great Cinco de Mayo celebration in 2021.

Did you try to make your own Great America michelada? Share your experience, and a photo, in the comment section below. Cheers!
